MountainView Hospital unveiled its newest weapon against infections Wednesday. The hospital will be the first in Nevada to use the Xenex UV Disinfection System.

The system uses UV light to disinfect patient rooms after the housekeeping staff has thoroughly cleaned them. The Xenex system has proven effective against some of the most common and dangerous superbugs, including a bacteria that can live on surfaces for months.

“The MountianView staff does a good job of cleaning, but we know there are always bacteria that can remain in a patient room. What we want to do is make sure we provide the safest possible experience for the patients throughout the valley,” Rachel Sparks with Xenex Healthcare Services said.

It takes 5 to 10 minutes to clean the room using the light technology. The light will mostly be used in rooms where a patient has contracted an infection along with operating rooms and intensive care units.
