Metro Plans Sobriety Checkpoint Friday Night

Metro Police plan a sobriety checkpoint Friday night in the northwest part of the valley.

The checkpoint will be located on Lake Mead just east of Buffalo from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. This checkpoint will focus attention on both drug and alcohol impaired drivers, with special emphasis being placed on drugged drivers as trained Drug Recognition Expert Officers will be evaluating.

This event is partially funded by a Joining Forces Grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety-Office of Traffic Safety. The grant made it possible to fund the deployment of a DUI van and a phlebotomist (blood technician.)

To choose the checkpoint location, Metro looked at the number of alcohol/drug related crashes and/or violations in the Northwest Area Command.  In the last 90 days ,there were 175 alcohol/drug related incidents in the Northwest area where the checkpoint will take place.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA,) 7 percent of all traffic accidents involve alcohol use.
