15 Year Old Fighting for Her Life

A 15-year-old Las Vegas girl knew something was very wrong when she started suffering headaches and nausea but she didn't know that the diagnosis would lead to the fight of her life.

Kassidy Merritt is a sophomore at Centennial High School. She was on the softball and tennis teams plus she played in the chamber orchestra. Even when she was feeling sick she went to softball practice and tried to keep up with her teammates. Soon after starting to feel ill she and her parents received a devastating diagnosis. A rare brain tumor was found her brain stem. To make it even worse the tumor was inoperable. Radiation or chemotherapy would help but her life expectancy was still less than two years.

In June her mother found a doctor using an experimental treatment for the type of cancer plaguing Kassidy but the price was exorbitant. $30,000 for the initial treatment and $8,000 for monthly follow-ups and it is not covered by insurance. The treatment uses a DNA altering drug that has showed great promise in previous treatments. She is in-treatment but her family needs the money to pay.

Saturday a golf tournament is being held at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City. Money raised will benefit the Kassidy Merritt Fund. The tournament stars at 10 a.m., entrance fee is $150 which includes lunch and range balls.

Centennial High School is also holding a garage sale, bake sale and car wash, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., to benefit their classmate. For more information about either event and to register for the tournament go to kassidysroadtorecovery.blogspot.com
