Neighborhood Party Planned for CJ the Chimp

A neighborhood block party is planned for Saturday to say goodbye to CJ the chimp and to raise money for her owner.

The chimpanzee gained national attention in July, when she and a male chimp called Buddy escaped from their enclosure at a northwest home.

Buddy was shot and killed by police, and CJ was recaptured. A few weeks later, CJ escaped again and was recaptured. That second escaped expedited plans to move her to an accredited wild animal sanctuary in Oregon.

A neighborhood block party will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., at Polly Gonzalez Memorial Park, which is on the corner of Bradley Way and El Campo Grande.

Admission to the party will be free, but vendors at the event will be donating part of their proceeds to the animal's owners to help pay for CJ's care at the facility. It costs $1,200 a month to house the chimpanzee at Chimp's Inc. Organizers hope to raise $20,000 to pay for a year of care.
