A new shade structure is going in at the Sunny Springs Park Skate Park, thanks to a letter from a 10-year-old boy.

Dalton Taylor, a fifth-grade student at Betsy Rhodes Elementary School, wrote a letter to City Councilman Steve Ross asking for the shade structure. He felt that it would enhance the skate experience for everyone.

“Dalton and I look forward to the swift completion of this shade project for the Sunny Springs Skate Park,” said Councilman Ross. “He and the rest of the community who come to enjoy the park will really appreciate the shade in time for summer.”

The groundbreaking for the new shade structure will be held at 9 a.m. April 15. The structure will provide shade for skate park users and people watching the skaters.

Newer, faster lift coming to Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort

There will be a faster way for skiers to make it to the top of some of the most popular trails at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort for the next ski season.

The resort announced Wednesday plans to replace the current lift on Chair 2 with a new quad lift which will increase the capacity to 2000 guests per hour versus the current 900.

Chair 2 brings skiers and snowboarders to the Lower West Bowl, The Line, and The Strip Terrain Park.

The new lift is the first milestone in the resort's multi-million dollar upgrade which includes more trails, more lifts, upgraded equipment and better facilities for guests.

Construction starts Monday and the lift is expected to be ready to go for the opening of the 2014-2015 season. The construction also means the ski resort will not be open for some of the traditional summer activities until July.
