Events, Closures and Fire Restrictions for Spring Mountains
Events, Closures and Fire Restrictions for Spring Mountains

With the high heat in the Las Vegas valley, many people will be tempted to escape the temperatures by heading into the mountains.

The Forest Service has several alerts it wants to make people aware of, before they go.

This weekend is the service's official kickoff to summer. The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area will host fun activities, outdoor demonstrations and workshops on native plants and animals.

The event will be held Saturday at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Besides the event, there are some closures people should know about. Deer Creek Highway, otherwise known as Highway 159, will be closed to through traffic June 11 and 12 for construction. The road to Hilltop Campground and Deer Creek Picnic Area will be open.

Old Mill, Foxtail, and Kyle Canyon Picnic Areas are currently closed for construction. Also, Mahogany Grove, McWilliams, Kyle Canyon and Dolomite Campgrounds are closed.

Officials also want to remind people of the fire restrictions in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect, which means fires and stoves in developed recreational sites are allowed. Gas stoves fueled by petroleum or liquid propane gas are allowed.
