Permits for Firewood Available Starting Next Week

Permits to get firewood from the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area are set to go on sale September 6.

The permits will be sold from 8 a.m.. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at a lot near mile marker five along Kyle Canyon Road, which is State Route 157. Permit holders are encouraged to bring a chainsaw since most of the wood has not been cut into lengths that can moved easily.

Firewood will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. About 800 cords are available. The wood is mostly ponderosa pine with some mahogany and fir. Each cord cost $20. Each household is limited to five cords. Cash and personal checks will be accepted. Credit cards will not.

All firewood purchases must be finished and picked up by 4:30 p.m. September 30. Any wood that has not been removed by that time will be forfeited. The forest service recommends that people get their wood the same time they get their permits.
