Clerk's Office Extends Hours for Special Recall Election
Politics

People living in city of Las Vegas Ward 6 who would like to vote in the special recall election have until January 14 to register.

The City Clerk’s Office will take in-person voter registration now through 9 p.m. January 14. The clerk’s office will have extended hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 12 and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14. The clerk’s office is on the first floor of Las Vegas City Hall.

The special recall election will be held Tuesday, January 31. Early voting will be January 26 and 27. Voters in Ward 6 will cast ballots on whether to recall Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross. The recall effort stems from a zoning dispute in the Centennial Hills Auto Mall, where longtime car dealer Joe Scala was forced to close his dealership Christmas Eve 2010.

Scala says Ross failed to help him with a zoning problem that resulted in the dealership's closure. Petition organizers argue Ross stepped in to help another dealership after he received a $10,000 campaign contribution from that dealership, but failed to intervene on behalf of Scala who did not donate to Ross' campaign. Ross has long defended his actions, saying Scala failed to take necessary steps to save his business.
