Mojave Max Watch, Contest Begin Thursday

Mojave Max Watch, Contest Begin Thursday

Groundhog Day arrives Thursday and in southern Nevada, the “Mojave Max Watch” will begin.

Although the live Mojave Max is still sleeping, people are invited to visit the desert tortoise at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor’s Center and join the Mojave Max Watch between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.  A special display has been set up where everyone can participate in predicting and watching for his emergence.

While Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, is pulled from his burrow and asked if he sees his shadow, Mojave Max simply waits for the moment when the daylight and weather are just right before coming out from his burrow and proclaiming spring.

Fall Harvest Festival at The Farm

Most people don’t image Las Vegas as a home for a farm, but there is one tucked away on Grand Teton Drive near the corner of Tenaya Way.

The Farm will be hosting a Fall Harvest Festival starting Friday and going through the end of the month. There is a maze, pony and hay rides, carnival rides for children, a pumpkin patch, face painting and concession stands. The rides and concessions will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free.

“It never ceases to amaze me how hard our volunteers work, including dozens of troops from Nellis Air Force Base, to create a wonderful, old-fashioned experience for our community,” said Sharon Linsenbardt, longtime owner of The Farm and host of the annual festival.  “They are truly dedicated, and we couldn’t do it without them.”
