Youth Groups to Clean Up Cigarette Litter in Parks

 

A number of local youth groups are partnering with Keep Las Vegas Beautiful, the American Lung Association and the city of Las Vegas to clean up cigarette litter in five city parks Saturday morning.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Parks that will be cleaned around playgrounds, grassy areas and picnic sections include:

A new multiuse trail near Red Rock Canyon will be the subject of an open house hosted Wednesday afternoon by the Bureau of Land Management.

The open house will be part of an environmental assessment (EA) that analyzes the construction of a multiuse trail from the 13-Mile Scenic Drive entrance paralleling State Route 159 until it connects to the Scenic Drive Exit parking lot.

The open house will be held from noon to 7 p.m. with short overview presentations at 2 and 6 p.m. After the presentations, attendees are invited to offer comment on the EA including specific feedback on the trail alignment, surface design and trailheads.

When people enter the fee booth at the entrance of the 13-Mile Scenic Drive, they should tell the attendant they are participating in the open house and fees will be waived.

The city of Las Vegas plays host to a free movie in the park at 7 p.m. Friday at the Centennial Hills Park Amphitheatre, 7101 N. Buffalo Drive.

The family-friendly film will be “Casper,” an animated film rated PG.

Robert Marlon Invites Admirers to Art Studio Grand Reveal Benefiting AFAN

Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) is partnering with local artist Robert Marlon for the grand reveal of his flagship art studio in Las Vegas on October 15 from 6-8 p.m. Guests are invited to peruse the private gallery and immerse themselves in the extraordinary mixed media paintings and fine art giclees while enjoying live music, complimentary cocktails and appetizers. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated back to AFAN to supplement its ongoing battle of fighting HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada.

Join AFAN in celebrating Robert Marlon’s artistic debut as he unveils his premier collection. Marlon has donated a piece of work titled Rainbow’s End to be auctioned during the event, awarding AFAN 100 percent of the sale. In addition, 15 percent of all gross sales of the evening will be donated back to the organization to continue supporting more than 4,000 clients living within the HIV/AIDS community.

Retriever Rescue Holds Reunion

Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada will hold its Reunion Bar-B-Que Fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Doggie District, 3223 N. Rainbow, will host the event. Group-friendly dogs are encouraged to attend, or join us for the BBQ without your dog. Cost is $10 per dog and the people eat free or $10 if you attend without your dog.

Local Memorial Service to be Held for Norway Victims

Thursday morning Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman met with members of the Norwegian community and signed a book of condolences for the victims of the massacre there last week. 

Locals will get a chance to sign the book at a memorial being held Thursday night. The community is invited to take part in the service to be held at 7 p.m. for the victims of the bombing in Oslo and shooting spree at a nearby youth camp. The event will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 111 N. Torrey Pines Drive. 

The service will be conducted primarily in English but will include Norwegian elements. Local Norwegians who own traditional folk wear called “bunads” are encouraged to wear them.

DUI Checkpoints Announced for Holiday Weekend

Local police plan a pair of DUI checkpoints over the Independence Day weekend.

The Metro Police Traffic Bureau, along with several Officers from Convention Center Area Command and Southeast Area Command, will be conducting a “Sobriety Checkpoint.” It is sponsored by the Joining Forces Grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

Officers from throughout Nevada will take part in this event to focus attention on both the drug- and/or alcohol-impaired driver. Special emphasis will be placed on the drugged driver as trained Drug Recognition Expert Officers will be evaluating impaired drivers.  

One checkpoint will be set up from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday within the Convention Center Area Command in the central area of Las Vegas, on Paradise Road just north of Tropicana Ave. Previous checkpoints at this location have been extremely successful in prior years.
