Dress for Success Sends Out an "S.O.S."

 

A local group that helps underprivileged women acquire business suits is readying for a major annual drive.

Dress for Success Southern Nevada, an affiliate of the international not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women, is participating in S.O.S. – Send One Suit – Weekend® taking place Thursday, March 1 - Sunday, March 4.

“This annual campaign encourages women nationwide to donate one new or nearly-new interview suit to help another woman enter the workforce and take charge of her life,” said Paige Candee, Dress for Success Southern Nevada founder. “These donations will greatly help women in southern Nevada to achieve self sufficiency.”

Las Vegas skateboarders are working together to help a young man hurt in a shooting at a skate park.

Skaterscentral.com is presenting the Skate for Keaton Benefit competition Saturday. Seventeen-year-old Keaton Belliston was seriously hurt when two men robbed a group of skaters at Mountain Ridge Park in Centennial Hills on January 3. After taking several items from the young men, one suspect took out a gun and shot into the group hitting Belliston.

The competition is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Skate City Indoor Skate Park, 4915 Steptoe Street #100. Skateboarders can enter the competition with an entry fee of $10. Those interested can pre-register at skaterscentral.com or at the door on the day of the event. There will be a $10 entrance fee to the event. All proceeds from the door and competition will go to Keaton Belliston’s family. A portion of the food sales from the event will also be donated.

Cowboy Christmas Party Set for Saturday

The city of Las Vegas is hosting a Cowboy Christmas and Classic Car Show Saturday.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Floyd Lamb State Park at Tule Springs. The event is free. It will include hay rides, a petting zoo, balloon artist, jump house and farmers’ market. There will also be craft and food vendors.

School choirs from Centennial, Shadow Ridge and Arbor View High Schools, along with several middle schools, will perform. Tours of the park’s historic ranch house will also be available. The event will also be accepting donations of canned food to benefit seniors in need. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve will be accepting new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots.

Watch 'The Grinch' Friday in the Park

People in are invited to watch a new Christmas classic in the park Friday night.

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey will be played at Police Memorial Park. The celebration starts at 6 p.m. There will be hot chocolate, cookies and candy canes. The Grinch will actually be there to take pictures with kids. Admission, pictures and refreshments are all free.

People are encouraged to bring blankets and low chairs to view the movie. The park is located off Cheyenne Avenue between Hualapai Way and Grand Canyon Drive. 

Bidding to Start at $1 Million for Mount Charleston Resort Property

Plans to use the property for vacation rentals were scuttled by county rules.

Once appraised at $6.5 million, a resort property on Mount Charleston is going to auction Friday with a minimum bid of $1 million for two luxury homes and four lots.

Youth Groups to Clean Up Cigarette Litter in Parks

 

A number of local youth groups are partnering with Keep Las Vegas Beautiful, the American Lung Association and the city of Las Vegas to clean up cigarette litter in five city parks Saturday morning.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Parks that will be cleaned around playgrounds, grassy areas and picnic sections include:

A new multiuse trail near Red Rock Canyon will be the subject of an open house hosted Wednesday afternoon by the Bureau of Land Management.

The open house will be part of an environmental assessment (EA) that analyzes the construction of a multiuse trail from the 13-Mile Scenic Drive entrance paralleling State Route 159 until it connects to the Scenic Drive Exit parking lot.

The open house will be held from noon to 7 p.m. with short overview presentations at 2 and 6 p.m. After the presentations, attendees are invited to offer comment on the EA including specific feedback on the trail alignment, surface design and trailheads.

When people enter the fee booth at the entrance of the 13-Mile Scenic Drive, they should tell the attendant they are participating in the open house and fees will be waived.
