Popular Picnic Areas on Mt. Charleston set to Close

Construction is set to start on several popular recreation sites on Mt. Charleston.

First on the list is the Cathedral Rock Picnic Area. Construction will start July 23. When the renovations are finished, there will be 68 single-unit picnic spots, 20 double-unit spots and two group spots. There will also be gathering spaces, a new water system and new toilet facilities.

Crews will also be expanding the parking area at the trailhead for the Cathedral Rock trail system. The area will be away from the main highway, making for a safer place to park. The renovated area is set to reopen in 2014.

Kyle Canyon Campground will be closed for similar construction starting Saturday. Renovations at that site are expected to be finished in 2013.

The U.S. Forest Service recently finished the renovations at the parking areas for Mary Jane Falls and Trail Canyon Trailhead.

Despite the closures, there are several campgrounds and picnic areas that are open on Mt. Charleston through August.  For more information about the sites that will be closed or to book one that is open, call the U.S. Forest Service at 866-388-7162, or go to gomtcharleston.com.
