NV Energy Grants $25,000 to Spread the Word Nevada Literacy Programs

NV Energy recently awarded a $25,000 grant to Spread the Word Nevada, a children's literacy nonprofit organization serving low-income children and families in the Las Vegas Valley and Clark County School District.

The grant will allow Spread the Word Nevada to continue providing children's books, family literacy events, and reading mentors to the 23 elementary schools adopted since the organization started in 2001.

"We are grateful for NV Energy’s continued financial support and belief in our children’s literacy programs," said Lisa Habighorst, Executive Director of Spread the Word Nevada. "Our mission of distributing books and promoting reading to the underprivileged children within our communities is so successful due to community partners like NV Energy.

Escobedo, Legacy Win Big at Music Competition

Escobedo Middle School and Legacy High School's Chamber Ensemble claimed top honors at the "Notes to Grow" music competition for local middle and high schools Saturday at Leavitt Middle School.

Both schools received $8,000 for their first-place finishes. A total of $36,000 in prize money sponsored by Las Vegas area Walmart and Sam's Club stores was divided among seven area schools’ music programs.

Local middle school and high school musical groups submitted applications and performance video for the contest for online evaluation and public voting.

Centennial High School's NJROTC Holding  Car Washes March 12th

Centennial High School's NJROTC is hosting a series of car washes this Saturday to raise money for a trip to Nationals. The group is charging $5 a car, and will be hosting car washes from 9am to 4pm at the following locations:

  • Lake Mead and Tenaya
  • Craig and Decatur
  • Lake Mead and Rainbow
  • Buffalo and Washington
  • Craig and Tenaya

Middle School and High School Students Sought for Rubik’s Cube Competition

The Las Vegas Science Festival is looking for teams of middle and high school students to compete in the Rubik's Cube Competition! The Competition is open to all Clark and Nye County Schools, be them public, private, religious, or home, with teams divided into two divisions, Division 1 for grades 6-8 and Division 2 for grades 9-12. the competition will have teams competing to solve 25 Rubik's Cubes. Registration is free, and the winning teams will get a cash prize!

College of Southern Nevada Hosts Spring Career Fair  To Connect Job Seekers and Employers

The College of Southern Nevada will be hosting the Spring 2011 Career Fair tomorrow, March 8th from 10am to 1pm. Job seekers should come in business attire and bring plenty of printed resumes to hand out to the dozens of potential employers on hand. Companies looking for fresh talent include the Clark County Fire Department, Abercrombie & Fitch, MGM Resorts International, and Nathan Adelson Hospice to name a few.

The event will take place on the CSN Cheyenne Campus in the Student Lounge, 3200 E. Cheyenne Avenue, Las Vegas NV

Coronado High School Wins Nevada Regional Science Bowl Tournament!

This weekend, on February 26th, the Nevada Regional Science Bowl Tournament took place. It was a 32 team, double elimination tournament, with competitors from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and California, and at the end of the day, the first place winners were the team from Henderson's Coronado High School! The team won $5,000 for the school, and will be going to Washington D.C. to represent the region in the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl Competition, April 28 - May 2, 2011! Congratulations to Coronado!

Other Vegas Area schools also made an impressive showing, completely dominating the top ten! A team from Palo Verde High School won second place, the Centennial High School "Blue" team took third, The Meadows School "Blue" team came in fourth while The Meadows School "Green" team won fifth place, and Shadow Ridge High School's team placed seventh! Las Vegas is obviously the place to be for budding scientists, congrats to all of our winners!
