DUI Checkpoints Announced for Holiday Weekend

Local police plan a pair of DUI checkpoints over the Independence Day weekend.

The Metro Police Traffic Bureau, along with several Officers from Convention Center Area Command and Southeast Area Command, will be conducting a “Sobriety Checkpoint.” It is sponsored by the Joining Forces Grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

Officers from throughout Nevada will take part in this event to focus attention on both the drug- and/or alcohol-impaired driver. Special emphasis will be placed on the drugged driver as trained Drug Recognition Expert Officers will be evaluating impaired drivers.

One checkpoint will be set up from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday within the Convention Center Area Command in the central area of Las Vegas, on Paradise Road just north of Tropicana Ave. Previous checkpoints at this location have been extremely successful in prior years.

Another checkpoint will be established in the Northwest area of Las Vegas, on Charleston Blvd at Community College Dr. The checkpoint will be conducted from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday.

To objectively select the site of the Northwest checkpoint, the department looked at the number of alcohol/drug related crashes and/or violations in the area. From January to June this year, there were 67 alcohol/drug-related incidents including 31 accidents and 14 arrests for DUI in the area where the checkpoint will take place. Additionally, prior DUI checkpoint(s) in the same area have resulted in numerous DUI arrests.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, (NHTSA), 7 percent of all traffic accidents involve alcohol use.

Officers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, North Las Vegas Police Department, Henderson Police Department, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in this event.
