New Bait Apartments Trap Would-Be Burglars

New Bait Apartments Trap Would-Be Burglars

Metro Police say the number of home burglaries is down in the northwest part of town because of a new tactic – bait apartments.

Like bait cars used to catch would-be car thieves, bait apartments are wired with cameras that catch would-be burglars in the act. Metro’s northwest area command says burglaries are down 13 percent because of the apartments. Detectives don’t just set up cameras, they also place GPS on electronics that are commonly stolen and sold to pawn shops.

"The biggest impact we've noticed is sometimes that information does leak out that we, as law enforcement, are setting up this bait apartment,” property crimes detective Aaron Lee said.  “It actually decreases crimes for the mere fact that we, as law enforcement, are in the community."

Metro Police arrested a man and a woman responsible for a string of robberies in the northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley.

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas Metropolitan Police say they have arrested two men in connection with the deadly shooting of a 21-year-old Las Vegas man on Sunday.

Police say Steven Arroyo, 19, of Las Vegas and Dominic Commisso, 18, of Las Vegas were arrested Wednesday on one count of murder with a deadly weapon for the shooting death of Charles Taylor. They are also facing charges of attempted murder.

Police say Arroyo and Commisso approached the victim and his friends as they sat outside an apartment complex on Torrey Pines Drive near Lake Mead Boulevard. He identified himself as "Scandals".  Police say the groups got into an arguement and Commiso open fired on the group hitting Taylor several times.

Fatal Shooting Raises Specter of Gang Violence

LAS VEGAS - A barrage of bullets flew when two rival gangs met at the Avery Park Apartments Sunday night. What started as a fight between two groups ended in bloodshed around 8:30 p.m..

Twenty-one-year-old Charles Taylor died from multiple gunshot wounds. Metro says two suspects, including the gunman, fled on foot.

Nick Tortarolo is alarmed about Sunday night's murder.

"It sure happened close to home. It's very unnerving," he said. "I've lived here 21 years, and in the majority of the last ten or so, it's gotten rough."

Tortarolo blames gang activity.

"It's not surprising to find out that the gangs are in the area again. We've had them before, and we are going to have to get rid of them again," he said.
