A relaxing day at the golf course turned into a harrowing experience for two southern Nevada men.

Last October, Gregory Castello was golfing at Paiute Golf Course when he clutched his chest and collapsed. A caddy saw him and radioed for help. Off-duty firefighter Mike Szoke was also golfing. He saw what happened and rushed to help. Szoke started CPR. He used an automated defibrillator to get Castello’s heart going again.

“It was a little different. Usually, we show up in the fire engine. We have all of our equipment and all of our stuff. So, I felt kind of out of place, but I was lucky I happened to be at the right place at the right time and the training took over,” Clark County Fire Department Captain Mike Szoke.

The two men have kept in touch. Monday, they met to talk about what happened.

“I am forever grateful for Mike. I am forever grateful for the fact that in this country we have a system that actually supports the training and development of front-line people,” Gregory Castello said.
