Student hurt during fight at Centennial High placed in medically-induced coma; other student charged

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Family members have identified the student hospitalized after a fight at Centennial High School as Xavion Smith. Xavion has been in a medically-induced coma at UMC due to his injuries since Wednesday.

According to Clark County School Police, the fight broke out between Smith and another student. Officers arrested the other student, a minor, and now he's facing a charge of battery with substantial harm. After the fight, police learned about a threat to the school. It turned out to be of what turned out to be unsubstantiated, but that hasn't kept officers from being highly visible on the campus for the past 36 hours.

"It's unfortunate that it's; I mean teenagers have enough to worry about; bullying, you know, 'what are my grades like,'" said Karie Millspaugh, parent. "This is the last thing that they need. It's unfortunate that it's become common news. It doesn't even make the headlines anymore which is extremely devastating as a parent."

In a brief phone call, Xavion's aunt told 8 News NOW he was flanked by family at UMC. Students told 8 News NOW Xavion is a sophomore who played football during his freshman year. They said he was pretty talented.

They say the threat is unnerving, but it's not the first time they've seen police presence at the school this year. Police learned of the now-unsubstantiated threat to the school through SafeVoice.

It's not clear how long students will see an increased police presence at Centennial High School.
