CCSD opens 6 new schools Monday

Starting Monday morning, Clark County School District students will have six brand new elementary schools. It's part of a larger effort to deal with a booming population and growth in the Las Vegas valley.

This map shows the locations of those new elementary schools.

There is a heavy concentration of them in the southwest part of the valley which is an area that is still growing. 8 News NOW had a chance to tour one of the new schools, Shelley Berkley Elementary, ahead of it's ribbon cutting ceremony Friday.

"Every single thing in this building had to be ordered from pencils to chairs, everything," said Dr. Diane Lewis, school principal.

In just a few days, 600 uniformed kids and 60 staff will descend on Shelley Berkley Elementary which is a new two-story elementary school in the southwest valley.

"We were looking for teachers who had that positive attitude and who looked at it much as I did. It's an honor and privilege to be able to open a new building and serve this community and serve these kids," Lewis said.

It is situated on a 10-acre lot. The school has a huge courtyard for outdoor learning and classrooms with lots of natural light.

"Every classroom has windows in it. We'll be playing off that to make sure kids are getting that natural daylight. What research tells us is their brains are activated by that natural sunlight. So, we'll be working hard to incorporate that into our learning and our instruction," Lewis said.

The school is one of six set to open on Monday.

The other schools are:
Jan Jones Blackhurst Elementary School
Lomie G. Heard Elemtary School
Dr. Beverly S. Mathis School
Billy and Rosemary Vassiliadis School
Josh Stevens Elementary School

All of the schools set to open are being funded through the passage of a bill in 2015 that allows for 10 years of bonding authority for new school construction and renovations. There will be a total of 17 new schools over the next few years.

Another school, Don and Dee Snyder Elementary is set to open in Jan. 2018.
