Autism advocate asks public to sympathize with parents who lost child in accidental drowning

An 8-year-old boy is dead, after what police are calling an accidental drowning.

Saturday was Jacob Davis’ birthday. But sadly Saturday night, Metro Police say the 8-year-old’s body was found in a backyard swimming pool.

Several people on social media are asking where his parents were during all of this. But autism advocates say not to place blame on anyone just yet, because raising a child with autism can be challenging.

Davis was reported missing earlier in the evening, believed to have walked away from his home near E. Russell Road and Mountain Vista Drive. Detectives say the boy had autism.

“When you think they’re safe, you can’t ever know,” said autism awareness advocate Melanie Bash... Read More

Hawaii crash claims 9 men, 2 women, most in their late 20s

HONOLULU (AP) – Casey Williamson’s love of adventure led him to winter snowboarding in Vail, Colorado, and summer skydiving in Moab, Utah. A year-and-a-half ago, he found his way to Hawaii, where he could skydive year-round.

On Friday, the 29-year-old was among 11 killed when their skydiving plane crashed and burned at a coastal airfield on the island of Oahu. It was the worst civilian aviation accident in the U.S. since 2011.

Williamson was his mother Carla Ajaga’s only child, his cousin Natacha Mendenhall said.

“We’re all very upset,” said Mendenhall, speaking from her home in Fort Worth, Texas. “She cannot really talk right now. What she wants everyone to know is how full of life her son was, how loving he was.”

Williamson, who was from Yukon, Oklahoma, worked as an instructor and as a videographer who filmed customers as they dove. He was trying to earn more jumping hours and learn the trade, Mendenhall said... Read More

Scamp the Tramp wins World’s Ugliest Dog Contest

Scamp the Tramp will never win a beauty contest. But he’s won an ugly one.

The bug-eyed, dreadlocked pooch took top honors Friday night at the 31st annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

Owner Yvonne Morones of Santa Rosa, California, won an appearance with Scamp on the “Today” show, $1,500 in cash, another $1,500 to donate to an animal shelter – and a trophy the size of a Rottweiler.

“He’s Scamp the Champ, no longer Scamp the Tramp,” Morones told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat after the victory. “I think the audience saw his beautiful spirit and everything he’s given back to the community.”

Scamp makes volunteer visits to schoolchildren and a local senior citizens center.

The street dog from Compton was rescued by Morones in 2014 after she spotted him on Pet Finder... Read More
