Mervyns Will Close 4 Nevada Stores

Mervyns will close four stores in Nevada, including all three locations in northern Nevada, as part of a cost-cutting move.

The Hayward, Calif.-based department store chain, which operates about 175 stores primarily in California, cited "under-performance" for closing stores in Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Las Vegas. The Las Vegas location that is closing is located at 4265 S. Grand Canyon Dr.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that they're among 26 stores that will be closed companywide. The chain, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, has seen its sales drop as California is among the hardest hit by the real estate slump.

Mervyns Chief Executive Officer John Goodman says the company will focus attention on remaining stores that meet performance objectives in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.

7 More Schools May be Added to Drug Testing Program

Drug testing for student athletes is set to expand dramatically at local schools. If it's approved by the school district, seven more schools will begin the program.

Centennial is one of those schools planning to use the program. The high school takes pride in girls basketball, volleyball and soccer. Behind the success are the 450 student athletes.

If a nearly $500,000 grant is approved, drug testing will begin there in July.

Principals like Trent Day have been watching the results of the first pilot program at Green Valley High School. He thinks the program can work at Centennial too.

Child Found in Swimming Pool

For the third time in a week, a young child has been found floating in a family's swimming pool. This latest incident happened in the northwest part of Las Vegas near Cheyenne and Rampart.

Neighbors say this 6-month-old little boy is at the hospital and doctors were able to find a pulse. They also say the boy's mother is a stay-at-home mom who adores her son. They were alone at their home when just after noon Friday their babysitter arrived and noticed the baby missing.
