Former Prison Guard Enters Guilty Plea

CARSON CITY -- A former correctional officer at the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony misconduct of a public officer, Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said.

The plea from Michael Ford, 31, was in connection with his attempt to smuggle and sell tobacco to prisoners. He made the plea before Melisa De La Garza, the District Court's arraignment hearing master in Clark County.

In January 2012, Nevada Department of Corrections investigators apprehended Ford at the prison when he had a large duffel bag of tobacco intended for sale to inmates. Ford was offered hundreds of dollars by inmates for smuggling tobacco into the prison system, where it is considered contraband.

"Our office takes seriously any allegations of corruption by public employees," Masto said.
