Package thieves caught stealing on camera in northwest valley

A northwest valley says a group of thieves stole two packages right from their doorstep, and it was all caught on camera.

It happened in the Monument of Lone Mountain community.

On the surveillance video, a man can be seen getting out a burgundy sedan as a young woman brings him the packages. The two are then seen quickly load up the car before taking off.

The victims say they're shocked by the brazen thieves because it happened in broad daylight when someone was in the home. 8 News NOW has decided to protect the victims' identities.

"I was angry and then the more I thought about it, I started to cry because I feel like we've been violated," the victim said.

The family says there were parts the husband needed for his repair business inside the box.

Fed Ex dropped the packages off at the front door.

"It's usually nice and quiet, and it's in a gated community but obviously that doesn't deter anybody."... Read More

Mother reacts to son's deadly crash

Family and friends gathered Monday night to remember a motorcyclist who died in a crash Sunday.

A vigil took place near Bradley Road and Azure Drive in the northwest part of the valley, where 27-year-old Joshua Connell died.

Police say Connell crashed into the back of a vehicle.

His mother Regina Connell spoke exclusively with 8 News NOW. She says, according to detectives, her son was traveling more than 80 miles-per-hour in a 35 mile-per-hour speed zone.

She says her son had been hurt before on his bike and knew the dangers of riding.

"I can't be a parent that turns my cheek and says that can't happen," she said. "I need to step up and take responsibility and say, 'Yeah, my child made a wrong decision, a bad choice, and it ended up costing him his life.'"

A Facebook picture of Joshua shows him performing a stunt on his motorcycle.

He leaves behind his girlfriend and their 5-year-old son. They also have a baby on the way... Read More

Residents of Silverstone Golf Course granted property tax break

There was a small victory Monday for some property owners in a golf course community. The Silverstone Golf Course in the northwest valley closed last September after it was sold.

After the golf course, closed homeowners in the area appealed their property taxes with Clark County because they claimed the closure of the course last September affected their property value.

"It's affecting all of us," said Hobie Hellerstein, resident.

On Monday, the county board ruled that property owners whose lot backs up to the golf course will receive a tax break on their 2016 property taxes.

The ruling comes while the golf course is under new ownership for the second time. The board gave homeowners with a lot 25 percent off of their property taxes. The tax break is good for one year.

But, everyone else in the community is out of luck... Read More

Wallet relief: Gas prices drop around the country

U.S. gas prices are at their lowest levels since 2009, according to GasBuddy.com.

Gas prices have continued their decline, falling below $1.80 per gallon which is low, but there's room for gas prices to continue to decline due to a weak seasonal demand.

According to GasBuddy.com's research, $1.79 a gallon, February's start at the pump is the cheapest February start since 2004. In the state of Nevada, we're averaging about $2.28 a gallon which is still pretty cheap, but nowhere near the middle states, averaging as low as $1.21 in some areas.

Other states still averaging over $2 a gallon:

Oregon ($2.01)

New York ($2.05)

Washington ($2.16)

Alaska ($2.39)

California ($2.58)

Hawaii ($2.63)

So what's causing the low gas prices?

Gas Buddy says while the price of crude oil has rebounded, high gasoline supply has so far prevented widespread increases in gas prices... Read More

Deadline approaches for KLAS-Cox deal

More than 300,000 households in southern Nevada that currently watch KLAS-TV Channel 8 will have to make other arrangements after Friday at midnight. That's when the KLAS signal will no longer be transmitted to all subscribers of Cox Cable.

Despite five months of negotiations with Cox Communications, no deal has been reached regarding what Cox should pay for re-transmitting Channel 8's programs, including next week's Super Bowl broadcast.

The cable company has gone on the offensive with statements about KLAS that KLAS General Manager Lisa Howfield calls "untrue and frankly offensive."

Howfield, who serves as general manager of Nevada's first and most honored television station, has heard just about enough trash talk from Cox Cable.

She says she would be remiss if she does not advise Channel 8 viewers who subscribe to Cox that they will lose the KLAS signal as of midnight Friday... Read More
