'It's just that I don't like d***,' Las Vegas mother says teen told to read explicit content in class

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A video recorded during a recent Clark County School District (CCSD) meeting has gone viral, and now an investigation is underway.

Kandra Evans appeared to be rattled as she stood before the CCSD board last week. She claimed her daughter was upset about what her high school teacher assigned her to memorize and say aloud in front of her class and shared a portion with the board.

"I don't love you. It's not you. It's just that I don't like d--- or any d--- in that case," Evans read from her daughter's assignment.

CCSD board members quickly stopped the public comment over the explicit language and the mic was turned off.

After she was stopped from speaking, captured on social media on a popular TikTok page, Evans claimed "adults can't handle hearing this content, yet they readily give it to kids in school."

Woman dies after suffering medical episode at Lovers & Friends festival, police say

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A 22-year-old woman who suffered a medical episode on the grounds of the Lovers & Friends festival Saturday has died.

Metro Police say Jacqueline Torres Espinoza of Las Vegas was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before 7:30 p.m. on May 14.

Las Vegas mother accused of driving drunk with child in truck, firing gunshot into air

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A mother is accused of driving drunk with her child and firing a gunshot into the air after a fight with a man in a densely populated neighborhood, Las Vegas Metro police said.

Tiffany Watts faces charges of discharging a gun or weapon where a person might be endangered, child abuse or neglect, and DUI, records showed.

Police said they responded to a call Friday for an illegal shooting in a residential area near Grand Teton Drive and Jones Boulevard in the northwest valley.

Responding officers spoke to a witness, who said a woman and a man had gotten into a fight before she heard the gunshot. Officers then attempted to locate a truck possibly involved, later finding it near the intersection of Bradley Road and Severance Lane, they said.

Metro police, SWAT on scene of barricade situation in northeast valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Metro police are on the scene of a barricade event in an apartment complex in the 4700 block of Cleopatra Ave near Cheyenne Avenue and Nellis Boulevard.

According to police, a woman was reportedly armed with a gun and wasn't allowing another person to leave one of the apartments. The incident is described by police as a family disturbance.

SWAT and crisis negotiators arrived to de-escalate, and the surrounding apartments were evacuated.

Las Vegas police: Man threatened Trader Joe's employee with corkscrew

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- A man is accused of threatening a Trader Joe’s employee with a corkscrew during a theft Monday, prompting a large police response, they said.

Adam McKay, 31, faces charges of robbery with a deadly weapon and burglary of a business, records showed.

Officers responded to the Trader Joe’s in Downtown Summerlin around 9:30 a.m. Monday for a report of a man, armed with a corkscrew, who stole a bottle of wine.

An employee said they witnessed McKay put the bottle in his pocket and then threaten an employee with the corkscrew, police said.

An employee said McKay had asked staff about the location of corkscrews in the store before taking one and confronting the other employee in a “fighting stance,” police said.

Crews contain brush fire near Griffith Observatory: LAFD

The Los Angeles Fire Department contained a small brush fire in Griffith Park Tuesday afternoon.

The fire was initially 50 feet by 100 feet in size and was located south of Griffith Observatory near the Boy Scout Trail, the Fire Department announced in an alert about 2:45 p.m.

By 3:25 p.m., the fire had grown to four acres, the LAFD said in an update, though half an hour later, the blaze was contained at six acres by 92 firefighters.

Steve Wynn misused Trump connection, DOJ alleges

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- Steve Wynn used his access to President Donald Trump and other administration officials to lobby on behalf of the Chinese government, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Announcing a civil action against Wynn, the Justice Department said it will use the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) for the first time in more than three decades.

Wynn is accused of making requests on behalf of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and a senior Chinese official to cancel the visa "or otherwise remove from the United States a Chinese businessperson who left China in 2014," according to a Tuesday DOJ news release.
